Bougainvillea is native to the West Indies and other tropical countries. Common names
include paper flower, . It is grown in subtropical and tropical regions as an ornamental
plant for its bright exotic coloured flowers. It grows best in average to moist
soil that is light and sandy, with a neutral pH of 6.6 to 8.5, and is hardy to
hardiness zone 8. For a good flush of flowers feed every two weeks.
Pot the starter
plants immediately upon receipt and keep out of direct sunlight for 3-5 days
and water well. This will help in reducing the shock experienced by the plant
during shipment. Add 1 or 2 tablespoons of rooting powder to 1 gallon of water
and feed the plant regularly to help stimulate good root growth.
Bougainvilleas will not
tolerate frost but will make an excellent bright addition to any home. The
plants require feeding 6 weeks after final potting with a general feed. Plants
should be allowed to dry out slightly between watering but before wilting and
watered from above and allowed to drain.
Enjoy the tropical
feeling without even leaving your home or breaking the bank. With a little
patience and TLC you can have your own tropical bougainvillea!
